Milk and Bread

I forgot to share this funny story when I was posting snow pics.

Anytime I am in the grocery store right before bad weather I always ask myself why everyone runs to the store for milk and bread.  You know what I am talking about.  I mean man can't live by bread alone and milk will spoil if the power goes out.  I usually give people a pass when it snows because at least you could set the milk outside and it would be fine.  But all of you who live around here know that is not the only time the stores' shelves are bare in the bread and milk section.  Tornadic weather, hurricane's a brewin', it's out to stock up on those two things.  Sometimes I feel like some people are just looking for a chance to rid those refrigerators.  And who is going to touch that milk if the power has been off all day.

So knowing that Sunday would produce some snow, some forecasts being up to 10 inches (but how often does that ever happen here, really) everyone and their mommas were out and about on Saturday with buggies full of groceries.  Milk and bread were not the only thing on some of these lists but you can bet most of them had about triple of what they would normally get.

Now I had to get things for Sterling's birthday party that was happening the next day so I was shopping in Walmart for a few party items.  But I also needed bread and milk (of course).  Maybe if I hadn't had party on the mind I would have thought of a few other grocery items we needed, but the only other things I was getting on that side was candy, cokes, and powdered sugar.

In my defense I have a 2-year-old that has just discovered the joys of chocolate milk, or "hot tocwate miwk" as he calls it.  So that is all that he has wanted to drink lately.  Whether he gets chocolate or plain, anytime you ask him what he wants to drink in the past few weeks the answer has been "milk."  I also have a husband who LOVES milk.  His whole family drinks milk with just about every meal.  Then there is me.  I hate milk, but I will put it on cereal and when I am pregnant I try to be good about getting more into my diet so I drink it with that Carnation Breakfast powder in it.  Normally I buy milk in threes and it never goes bad, but lately I think I could buy four at a time and be just fine.

Anyway, back to Walmart.  Of course the food side is crammed full of people and there is almost a line at the milk section.  So, I get to the milk and remember that I have about half a gallon at home.  Normally I would be safe with getting just two gallons, but like I said I could have gotten three with what we had at home and never thrown out a drop.  But I remember why I am having to park my cart and walk over to the milk instead of drive up like usual, SNOW IS COMING!  Everyone is freaked out about this snow so everyone is getting all this milk.  I heard the man beside me saying, "Well, you think we should get two instead before it is gone" and being a little bit prideful about not buying into the hype and a little bit caring about those who did, I decided to be conservative and just get one.  ONE!  Remember I really could use three.  But so there is enough to go around I think, "Well, even if we can't get out Monday morning, by Tuesday we will be ok and I'll just get Alex to get some on the way home from work that day. We'll just be conservative."

I then get some candy for the party and then I remember we are out of bread, I need to get that to.  Since my child would eat a sandwich for every meal of the day, every day of his life if I let him, I could probably buy bread in twos as well, but I just pick up one and go on my merry way, secretly sneering at all of these crazies who would have been better off purchasing a cow.

I check out, we have the party and the snow indeed comes.  I have shared that we got quite a bit and that our roads were bad for days.  Not only were the roads bad but we have to go over a bridge (and not just a tiny one) to get into town to actually go to the store.

Somehow we make it through Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with a little over a gallon and a half of milk, but by Tuesday afternoon we were out of both milk.  Alex told me that he would have to go in to work for at least a little while on Tuesday so instead of continuing our ration, we all had toast for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch.  So we are out of bread too.

When Alex got home he brought in two or three gallons of milk and no bread.  I was like, "Where is the bread."  He said apparently the bread truck couldn't make it to the store or something because there was none.  Not just none of the kind we like, he went on to say there were no hot dog buns, no hamburger buns, nothing.

So we went for days with no bread and a child who asks for a sandwich for every meal.  When he gets at least one for lunch he usually doesn't put up too much of a fuss when you say "No, we are having ___."  But after three days the kid just wanted a sandwich, and by then I was starting to feel sorry for him. I was about start digging through the pantry for that packet of yeast that I know I have somewhere and try to make a loaf (which didn't turn out successful last try) when I got the good news, the store finally got more bread!

Next time the weather is bad I am not going to be worried about what others are thinking, if I need milk I am going to proudly look like one of those paranoid shoppers hording before the storm.  Maybe I'll even make a shirt that says, "Yes, I always buy this much milk" on the back it can say "and we drink every last drop"

Thank You For the Food

As we were sitting down for supper yesterday Sterling said that he wanted to ask the blessing.  I have been working on this with him teaching him to repeat a simple prayer.  I thought using simple childlike language would hopefully produce more heartfelt prayers instead of a rhyme.  Not that there is anything wrong with teaching your child to pray a prayer that rhymes, but I decided just to teach him something like "Thank you Jesus for the ______"  or even "Thank you Jesus for the yummy ____"  I thought that he would need some prompting like usual, however he jumped right in with this:

"Dear Lord ... Jesus Christ ... Thank you for the food, the breakfast-the supper.  Thank you for the beans and ... (pointing to his burrito) Eat Now.  Amen"

Snow By the Bucket Loads

The last bits of snow have finally melted from our Winter Storm 2011, and I am finally getting around to posting pictures.  We had about 4 or 5 inches with the first 2 or 3 falling in under an hour!  We didn't attempt driving for two whole days and when we finally could get out the roads were still pretty bad in places.  My cousin from New York will be mentally laughing at my astonishment of the snow, but we usually don't get it like this in the South.

Notice the snow on the road.  When we woke up it was completely white, you couldn't even tell where the road began!

This snow suit makes me think of that children's book Snow Day.  I'm so glad I got it, we have gotten good use out of it so far!

It's a Two Two Train Party

Sterling is loving trains right now.  Really he loves everything that goes, but since I had decided to get him a wooden train set for his birthday I decided to throw a train party to go with it for his second birthday.  We celebrated with a few of his friends from church.  Thankfully we got the part off before all of the snow arrived!  Everyone made it home safely and Sterling had such a great time.  He is still asking where his friends are.  I have to remind them that they are home and everyone has to stay home because of the snow.

My mom got better pictures I am sure, but due to the weather situation they had to scoot out soon after the party and I didn't think to get her camera card.  So hopefully I will have some more pictures from his party next week.

 Two Years Old!!
The kids all had their own train car to decorate and eat.

 The two-two trains

All of the kids decorated their own train cars with candy and icing.  We put a powdered sugar/milk glaze on top since they wouldn't have much icing on them (my mother's genius idea) and I must say it was yummy.  I love birthday cake and I love icing, but those little cakes tasted like cake doughnuts!

Sterling loves his new tricycle and wants to wear the "Witening" McQueen helmet everywhere.  I can't wait to see my mom's pictures she was snapping away the whole time.  Thanks for all your help Mom with the party.

Happy Birthday Sterling!

Sterling started off the morning waking up in his big boy bed for the first time.  We weren't really planning on moving him yet.  We just wanted to get everything ready for the move.  But I think after all of the talk about sleeping in it and seeing us moving it and all of his toys into that room, he decided he was ready.  Yesterday afternoon Sterling begged me to let him sleep in his big boy bed.  I didn't even have sheets for it, so we tucked in larger sheets and found a blanket and he took his first nap and spent his first night in his bed.  He did amazingly well, he even waited for me to come and get him before getting up.  We don't get him out of bed until 8 whether he is awake or not, and I really didn't want to break that habit.  Hopefully he will keep that up.

I asked him what he wanted to do and he said "Watch the racecar movie"  We know in our house that means Disney's Cars, so I put the DVD in our room and we all snuggled in our bed.  I made one of Sterling's favorite breakfasts, blueberry muffins.
Then he opened his new wooden train set, and he and Alex spent the morning putting it together and rolling the trains around the tracks.  He has played with this train set ALL DAY!  We also had to run an errand at Lowe's so we stopped by TJ Maxx and picked up the sheets I had picked out for his bed.  He loves them, and kept telling me he wanted to take out his "sheeps."  So we washed them immediately and they were dry just in time for his nap.

Then I slaved all night making Sterling his favorite meal peanut butter and jelly.

A Mother's Joy

My Dear Boy,
What do I say about the past two years.  You have turned our world upside down in the most wonderful way.  What a privilege it is to be your mother.  I can't imagine life without your sweet smile and big squeezes.  You have such a caring heart and you are already fulfilling your name by being everyone's protector.  Just today at Lowe's you made sure that Daddy was being careful while checking out with his cart of lumber.

You are our little chatter box and we love listening to all of the funny things that you say.  You love being around others and I really think you are turning into quite the extrovert, something totally foreign to mommy.

We have watched you go from a crawling baby in a highchair to a big boy doing all the things that big boys love to do.  You race (and crash) your cars, "bwiwd a tunnel", play ball, build train tracks and roads.  You love to read and you always want to "Let Mommy do it" or "Let Daddy do it."  You sleep in your big boy bed and wear big boy underwear.

You are becoming such a wonderful helper around the house, and I know you will be the most amazing big brother.  Ann Elizabeth will be the luckiest girl in the world.  It's amazing how much you love her already, you are so ready for her to get here!

But the most amazing thing has been to watch your heart this year.  Daddy and I can both see the Lord doing a work in you, teaching you Truth.  God has given you an incredible memory and we love seeing how he allows you to recall His Truth and His Word.

We are praying that you never know a day that you didn't love Jesus.  Our God is so gracious to us in that He is the one who calls us out of our sin and darkness, not leaving it up to ourselves (which would be impossible).  That truth is so encouraging to this mother's heart, because I know that the Lord will choose to begin that work when He so chooses, and we are praying fervently that He is beginning it even now.  As I see your heart desire to be kind and take care of others, as I see you delight in reading and memorizing God's Word, as I see your heart repent after discipline, I see Christ beginning His good work in you and my heart rejoices.

I love you with all of my heart my sweet son.  You have been a baby every mother dreams about, and more wonderful than I could have ever imagined.

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY!!

With all of My Love,
Mommy

"The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice."  Proverbs 23:24-25

Christmas and New Years

After playing in the snow we loaded up to head to Nanie and Pop's house.  Sterling had so much fun, as always, playing with his cousins!  We spent the afternoon in Sylacauga then headed back home to go to church Sunday morning.  Then headed back to Sylacauga to see Alex's extended family.  Are you starting to see what I mean about being in the car a lot?  I guess I shouldn't complain, my parents had to back us all in the car every Christmas night and head 10 hours from East Texas to  Huntsville every year.  Even though It may have seemed like it, I know we weren't in the car for 20 hours!  And of course it was all worth it!!

Monday we headed home for a few days of relaxation (sort of)  Sterling got to play with his new toys and Alex and I started the process of trading beds and moving furniture around for his new "Big Boy" room.  We are keeping the nursery the same, just adding some pink, and Sterling is moving across the hall.  So for two days we changed our guest room/office into a room for Sterling.  We are having to become very creative with space and we really need to finish those Queen Ann chairs I started a while back so we have more places to sit.  But Sterling is loving his new room.  (More on that later).

Anyway, Wednesday we headed back to Sylacauga (yes back) loaded with our guest bed on a trailer to set up at my mom's house, that way we no longer have to kick Jameson, who is always a good sport, out of his room when we come.   My grandmother from Texas, Memaw, was heading for Texas for a visit and we arrived shortly after she did.

Memaw is an amazing quilter and seamstress but she has a real passion for quilting.  We have been trying to get her to start a business for years.  Anyway, when looking for bedding for Sterling's room months ago, I found this adorable quilt at Pottery Barn.

Before I clicked add to cart, I had an epiphany, why don't I see if Memaw wants to make it for Sterling.  I wanted something that is neutral and will grow with him through whatever phases of room decor he might desire, so I am planning on using it in his room for years anyway.  Now he won't just have a cute quilt, he will have a sweet keepsake from his grandmother as well.  I called her up and she thought it was a wonderful idea.  So upon her arrival we started quilt making.  We also started cooking because Mom wanted to wait to have Christmas dinner for when Memaw was there.  So we ate a huge Christmas dinner complete with Greenberg Turkey on New Year's Eve.  We baked Christmas cookies and Sterling and KerKer played with KerKer's new toy to himself, a Polar Express Train.

We always had a train that went around the tree growing up and my Dad always loved it.  But I didn't quite remember how much my father loves trains until Sterling started liking them as well.  Let's just say he gets it honestly.

Sterling and Memaw

KerKer got Sterling a train for his birthday.  Since he won't be here this weekend he went ahead and gave it to him.  This one was a bit more his size.  It has a controller too, and is still a little hard for Sterling to work, so that means KerKer has to play with him, which means hours of engineering time together.  I thought Dad was crazy for getting this, but after watching the two of them play trains all day for days on end I see that it was just as much for his own entertainment, kind of like fathers who get gaming consoles for the "children."  The thing is, like most of us know, men never really grow up.  They all never make it much past 5 and still love playing with toys, so when a child comes along it is an excuse for them to play again.
