Kitchen Redo? Opinions needed

Since we moved in a year ago I have been trying to decide what to do with my kitchen cabinets.  In a word, I hate them.  Ok, maybe not hate, they are actually nice cabinets as far as the style but I hate the 80's yellow oak color.  I've gone back and forth, should I paint them white, but I have white floors?  Should I stain them, but that takes so much work.  My latest idea was to put a darker reddish glaze on them to get rid of the yellow tone, which on the difficulty scale I think probably falls between the two.  All of that is still undecided but I do have solution to another problem.

Our overhead cabinets above the peninsula make the kitchen seem so small.  When I'm cooking I have to bend over to see to the table.  I would love to be able to clean up in the kitchen while being able to easily interact with Sterling sitting at the table, or talk to my waiting family while getting everything out of the oven.  The simplest solution would be to take out the cabinets altogether.  But in a small kitchen extra cabinets are a luxury.  Also, that would eliminate our range hood which makes that idea less possible.

Alex and I have talked about moving them up to the ceiling; however, I thought that having regular sized cabinets against the ceiling would look silly.  Which they would unless we did it like this.

I stumbled upon a blog today and and after about two clicks I found this kitchen redo that started very similar to our own kitchen.  I don't know who this is, but I love her new kitchen. (If you click on the picture you can see her before and after pics as well as some during the process.)

Here is a refresher on what ours looks like.

We are a couple of steps ahead where her fabulous kitchen started.  We have new black counter tops, cute cabinet pulls, and appliances that match.  But I love the way her upper cabinets look with a shelf to display cute dishes and cookbooks.  And the best thing of all, it gives me a little more storage not less.  And, well this is probably the best thing, it wouldn't cost us very much to do this.

Well, what do you think.  Should we take the plunge?  Please leave your opinion.

Ahhh! We are having the same problems! But I think we are going to end up going with the "painting them white"option. Also, the kitchen and family room are totally open (which is great for watching TV while cooking) and the fireplace mantel is the same craptastic color. We have been wanting to paint it white also, since white is my new fave decorating color, so white would be great for the cabinets also.

Okay, so that wasn't any opinion or advice for you--just my own ramblings. That being said, I do love your inspiration pic. Your floors, although a lighter color, don't look white to me. I think your cabinets would look fabulous in white!

Though I think your kitchen is already lovely, I must admit that the other is beautiful as well. I am just amazed that you and your hubs can together even consider tackling such a project. You guys have got the skills - so if you're up for it, go for it! :)

Kelly, we are leaning towards white right now, but I am still not sure. Our mantle is also that same color as well as the bathroom cabs. With an off white foux marble slab, that is still going to take some brain storming.

Katie, thanks. It looks a lot more difficult than I think it will be. Plus we have some handy friends, one of which is a builder. I am hoping they can lend a few extra hands (and brains).

I love that kitchen! Some things that I think "make it" are the white tile backsplash, the white tongue and groove ceiling, the stainless appliances and copper accessories. You could totally do this! When we remodeled our kitchen we pushed the cabinets up almost to the ceiling and I love having that extra storage space.

Ok...from my standpoint as a designer, I think if you don't necessarily need those cabinets above stove then get rid of them. If you did that, you could then bring in a nice hood because right now it doesn't look like your hood is being vented anywhere, but it may be just one of those hoods that doesn't have to be vented. If you got rid of those cabinets, your kitchen would be REALLY open. You would just cap off the end cabinet where you remove the other cabs. You can use an end panel off the existing panel that you remove. There isn't a problem with moving cabinets higher but the standard is 18" between counters and cabinets. I would make sure that they don't go any higher than 24" between the cabinets and counter. The real question is that when you do move them; will you be able to reach the top shelf? I think alot of kitchens are inundated with this problem because no one thinks about visibility between rooms when kitchens are done. Hope this helps.
